The author was superintendent of Dunedin gardens and reserves and stated his that his intention in publishing the manual was to take the place of the earlier manual by Murphy. There is a small section on native plants. Other writers A.E. Lowe, W. Sinclair and R. Nicoll contributed chapters on garden bulbs, vegetable and fruit growing and rose growing for exhibition. Illustrated with photographs. A New Zealand gardening classic.
