A poetry collection by Catherine Mair with illustrations by June Carlton. Caterpillar is a word-picture account of a trip through a country area of New South Wales, Australia and from Hong Kong to Beijing to Lhasa in Tibet. It is an attempt to capture immediate impressions in the way one clicks off film in a camera. Taking this analogy one step further, the images need to be read as 'double-exposures' - one image superimposed on top of another, often multifaceted. In the visual areas such as Guilin and the Li River we have assembled a concentration of illustrations, whereas in airports, when the CAAC (Chinese Airlines Always Cancel), illustrations seemed inappropriate.
