This is an extremely pleasant story of Penelope Stanton (known as "Gay"), a girl who loves adventure but who is obliged to spend her summer holiday with her Great-Aunt Rachel while her parents are abroad. Aunt Rachel has always been considered as rather a grim old lady, but although she is very old fashioned, she is anxious for Gay to enjoy herself. Gay finds a stray spaniel puppy and looks after it until it is restored to its owners - a family living in the neighbourhood with a son named Peter, who becomes her friend. Illustrated by M.
