This book is the first biography in English of Machiavelli which gives in brief compass a comprehensive narrative of his life and an indication of how his writings arose from it. It describes the work on diplomatic and military missions for the Florentine government which gave him a close insight into Italian and European politics during the most crucial generation of the Renaissance, and it describes the circumstances in which, debarred from political life for his last fifteen years, he wrote the military, literary and political works which have made him the most famous Italian since Julius Caesar. It is not concerned with 'Machiavellianism' but to give an account of the man behind the phrase, based on the sources and on recent scholarship.
