The Story of Mankind by Hendrik Willem Van Loon

In 1922, the first ever Newbery Medal went to The Story of Mankind, an illustrated history of Western civilization created by the Dutch-American writer Hendrik Willem van Loon. These photos come from the 1926 Newbery Enlarged Edition that added an essay to update the contents up to World War I. The 165 illustrations created by the author himself are among the most striking features of this award-winning children’s book.
