Sir Archibald McIndoe and plastic surgery are synonymous. Most people know of the brilliant New Zealand surgeon's work during the war, when scores of disfigured Servicemen went to the Queen Victoria Hospital at East Grinstead for repairs. Few people, however are aware of the personal side of Sir Archibald's life, a life full of incident and unconventionality. To reveal his life ids to tell the story of a man of fantastic energy, a man who worked to a split second time table in order to perform more operations in a week than many surgeons perform in a year, a man who conducted an unceasing war against red tape and antiquated laws of officialdom; who, for instance, allowed other patients to watch his operations; who insisted that the "Top Brass" and "Other Ranks" should live a communal life at his hospital, and who never missed an opportunity to improve conditions and surgical methods.
