It is an account of holidays in Lakeland at a time when people still enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, in the halcyon days before the First World War. Herbert and Agnes Mary Valentine lived at Workington on the Cumbrian coast. Mr Valentine was an Ironmaster at the Steel Works and was the son of a one-time Conservative MP for that town. His wife, a trained artist, was a member of the Housman family and a cousin of Laurence and A E Housman. The Valentines wrote and illustrated this humourous account of their annual holidays in Lakeland in a style reminiscent of Jerome K Jerome's 'Three Men in a Boat', a book they had obviously read and enjoyed.
