A Chain of Voices is set in the early 19th century. It takes places on a South African farm as it prepares for the harvest. This is a Bible-haunted book, and in it the threshing floor takes on the same spirit of righteous violence that pervades the books of the prophets. The words of Isaiah (41:15) might have made a good epigraph: “Behold, I will make thee a new sharp threshing instrument having teeth: thou shalt thresh the mountains, and beat them small, and shalt make the hills as chaff.”. This 1983 Flamingo Paperback is in good condition.
