As the protagonist for his new play, Osborne has chosen a middle-aged, sex-obsessed lawyer, Bill Maitland. The play opens with a dream sequence, in which Maitland is in the dock, sweat gleaming on his face, as he helplessly tries to justify his tawdry life. Thereafter, dream and nightmarish reality intertwine as Maitland, in as withering and compelling a self-analysis as exists anywere in the contemporary theater, pitilessly destroys himself. This 1965 Grove Press Paperback is in fair condition.
