A novel about real people and real events featuring two young New Zealand soldiers from the South Island of New Zealand fighting with the New Zealand Division. They are catapulted into the slaughter of the second battle of Ypres in October 1917. Ernest Ingram is a talented artist. Christopher Jones is a writer and social commentator. Both are excellent soldiers but out of the trenches they are trouble to the military authorities. Their friendship is indissoluble until Ernie meets Helen, a beautiful married woman. Over Christmas 1917 Helen begins an affair with Chris, unbeknown to Ernest. Both men return to the terrible fighting of 1918 believing they have Helen's love. Before the war ends Ernie is wounded and Chris contracts influenza. Helen's husband is killed on the Western Front. Helen and Chris meet in Weymouth. They decide to marry. The loss of Helen plunges Ernest into suicidal depression. In New Zealand Chris becomes a politician and writer. However following the death of her little girl Helen leaves with a wealthy arms dealer to America. Back in Dunedin Ernie's depressive mental illness returns limiting his work as a painter.
