Judith Wilmont, an orphaned child of ten, is sent from England to live with her Great-aunt Eulalie in New Zealand. But the house on Mairangi Street is no ordinary house; nor is Aunt Eulalie and ordinary person. Judith reveals no curiosity about the scar on Aunt Eulalie's neck, not is she particularly interested in her Great Aunt's bitter innuendoes concerning her estranged sister Eudora. However, after a tragedy, Eudora reappears to take Judith to her home, named Mairangi after the street she grew up in, where history threatens to repeat itself.
