Grotesque’s premise revolves around two middle aged prostitutes (Yuriko and Kazue) who were found murdered in Tokyo. Twenty years prior, both women attended the same prestigious school along with Yuriko’s older sister, an unnamed narrator who is tasked with conveying over half the narrative. While advertised as a crime novel, this story is fundamentally an introspective dive into the psyches of three desperate and embittered women (and one man) who have struggled to live meaningfully within a rigid and what feels like a predetermined and unalterable society. The crime aspect of this novel is subsidiary to these aspects and merely serves as a conduit for the story’s presentation. The depravity of human nature is juxtaposed with the equally destructive but more sophisticated reality of society that is in part illustrated as a reflection of the former.
