This study investigates the effect and importance of good employment relationships upon the individuals in a society and upon the prospects for productivity, innovation, and economic growth in the society as a whole. The author contends that "good" employment relationships do not exist outside of their social or legal context, and demonstrates how New Zealand's labor market laws reliance on centralization and coercion have turned workers and employers into adversaries. Brook argues that what is needed is a system of labor law centered on co-operation between workers and employers, which protects workers by guaranteeing their freedom both in the workplace and in union relationships, and empowers them to choose how they will be employed and how they will be represented in employment negotiations.
