The Little Yellow Digger by Betty Gilderdale

The little digger working next door gets stuck in the mud so the workmen bring in a bigger digger, but it too gets stuck in the mud, so they bring in a bigger, bigger digger. In the end they have to give up as the list of equipment stuck in the mud grows. The workmen wait for a fine day when the ground has hardened and find that, in the end, it's the little yellow digger that frees all the bigger equipment.
