Foreword: This booklet is published to mark the "coming-of-age" of the New Zealand Journalists' Association and its constituent unions. Two years ago the suggestion was made that a history of the union movement should be compiled to celebrate this event. The idea, apparently, was that there was a crop of recollections white for harvest. The reapers, however, found their task rather more formidable than a preliminary survey of the field had lead them to suppose.... It is hoped that this modest booklet will serve as some acknowledgement of the debt which the profession owes to the men whose work in the early years paved the way to the enjoyment of conditions which are today the common heritage of working journalists. Ma tghe years ahead be as fruitful of achievement as those which have fled.
