When R. B. Cunninghame Graham set off for the city of Taroudant in 1897, the southern Morroccan province of the Sus was forbidden territory for the European. These were the years of the imperialist scramble for Africa. A vociferous opponent of imperialism Cunningham Graham nevertheless shared the period's sense of adventure. His love of Spain and South America fuelled his curiosity about Spain's Moorish past. Because of the deep suspicion of Christians by the local populace and the fear of the authorities about imperialist adventures, Cunninghame Graham disguised himself as a Turkish doctor, and set out for Taroudant. Within sight of the city, however, he was arrested and detained by the Caid of Kintafi for a fortnight. Mogreb-El-Acksa, is his account of the adventure.
