American teenager Sarah Steinway visits her separated scientist monther on Great Kauri (Barrier) Island in the Hauraki Gulf and quicklky finds that her 'summer' holiday is a damp, cold winter and that her mother is so busy she seldom sees her. The prospect is lonely and bleak. Then Sarah rescues an injured albatross and takes it to a remote bush shack occupied by Hattie, a mystical old woman. In nursing the rare bird, Sarah and a 'dropout' Maori boy named Mako confront, conflict and finally come together in understanding. In quite magical ways, Hattie seems to know both teenagers' innermost hopes and fears and the role Mako is destined to play in healing the rift between Maori and Pakeha cultures.
