Ten years ago Mr Gilbert's book of short stories, Free to Laugh and Dance, appeared. In those stories Mr Gilbert displayed his knowledge of many facets of New Zealand life. His new book, Glass-Sharp and Poisonous, is an allegorical novel which, however, holds the reader as much by its exciting story as by its underlying meaning. Briefly, the book points the warning that those who persist in the wearing of rose-coloured spectacles of illusion are preparing their own destruction, and that all life is a struggle from illusion towards reality. In turn comic, beautiful and terrifying, this novel is something new in New Zealand writing.
