He Rā Maumahara - Remembering the New Zealand Wars
Share
Summer is looming, which means more light for reading, and the shop is bulging with books: philosophy, politics, history, fiction, children's - we've got it all. We've also currently got numerous brand new books on the shelves, several about the New Zealand Wars. This is deliberate as in the week before Te Pūtake o te Riri, He Rā Maumahara we're very excited to be hosting Joanna Kidman and Vincent O'Malley.
Joanna Kidman (Ngāti Maniapoto and Ngāti Raukawa) and Vincent O'Malley (Tangata Tiriti) will be in the shop on Tuesday 22 October at 6.30pm to discuss the importance of remembering the NZ Wars.
When: Tuesday, 22 October 2024, 6:30pm
Where: Book Haven, 160 Riddiford St, Newtown
Who: Joanna Kidman and Vincent O'Malley
Joanna and Paul have written, talked and researched extensively about the impact of the New Zealand Wars and our colonial past and present. We all know that we have a difficult colonial history, a history that is often 'forgotten' - but colonialism and the NZ Wars have had a huge non-ending impact on the this country.
This year is only the 7th year that the NZ Wars have been officially commemorated, and the day coincides this year with Labour Day, so like the often ignored battle scars all around us, the day may be all too easily overlooked. We hope not.
If you're in Newtown on 22nd October come and join the talk with Joanna and Vincent. If you can't make it, we recommend reading some of their work:
Fragments From a Contested Past: Remembrance, Denial And New Zealand History by Joanna Kidman and Liana MacDonald and Vincent O'Malley and Tom Roa and Keziah Wallis
The Invasion of Waikato : Te Riri ki Tainui by Vincent O'Malley
The New Zealand Wars | Ngā Pakanga O Aotearoa by Vincent O'Malley
Also, check out E-Tangata - an online weekly magazine for writings by both Joanna and Vincent.
