PROLOGUE: Charlie Talent Manx III, a man who suffers a series of major disappointments in life. A difficult childhood with a whore for a mother. The stock market crash and the Great Depression. An angry housewife. The final blow is being taken in by a scam that leaves him destitute: He is told by a man named Nick LeMarc (a bad pun) that he is investing in Christmasland, a theme park in the Colorado mountains that will make him a ton of money. Manx buys a nice car, the Rolls Royce Wraith of the title, and dresses as a chauffeur to drive his two daughters and his understandably angry wife to the theme park. When they arrive, he finds two large candy-cane decorations acting as an entrance to an empty lot with all the trees chopped down. Only then does he realize he's been scammed. However, Charlie mysteriously connects with the Wraith: They have a combined power capable of imagining into existence a terrifying Christmasland theme park. He ferries children to this place and they become something else—little monsters with white skin and razor-sharp teeth, that can neither age nor die. CHAPTER 1—THE GET-AWAY: Desperate men will will resort to desperate measures. It was desperation that drove Chess Llewelyn to commit a crime that bought him seven years hard time...and it's desperation of another sort that drives Denis Sykes, A.K.A. the King Geek, to attempt a jailbreak of staggering ingenuity and violence. Chess will find himself hauled along for the ride: a ride so terrifying it could almost be one of the attractions in scenic Christmasland! CHAPTER 2—DARK PASSAGE: Following a bloody car crash, the three escaped convicts—Chess, Sykes, and Hansom—are looking for a set of wheels that can carry them to freedom. Charlie Manx arrives, courtesy of a well-placed phone call by Hansom, with just the ride they need...but when they get to Christmasland, they'll wish they went to prison instead. Ten years of hard time looks pretty easy compared to twenty-four hours in a frozen graveyard disguised as the world's coldest, cruelest amusement park. CHAPTER 3—FASTBALL: The calliope plays a lunatic waltz; the rides run at breakneck speeds; Christmasland is open for business and Charlie Manx's children are closing in on Chess Llewelyn and Officer Agnes Claiborne. Corrections Officer Kevin Coombes dies of blood loss when the demonic children attempt to amputate his legs. Hansom's hand is severed with a sword. Dark magic waits around every corner...but just maybe Chess has a trick of his own up his sleeve. CHAPTER 4—RULES OF THE GAME: The hunt has begun. Christmasland's prisoners are scattered and on the run. Dewey Hansom is slaughtered among the park's dark amusements. The only way out has vanished, darkness is coming, and Charlie Manx's children are everywhere. Chess Llewellyn and Agnes Claiborne have one hope—to figure out the rules of this new, impossible landscape and find a loophole that will allow them to fly away. King Geek gets the drop on Charlie Manx. CHAPTER 5—SHOOT THE MOON: A laughing malevolent moon rises over Christmasland, and turns red snow black, as Agnes Claiborne and Chess Llewellyn make a final doomed, desperate run for freedom. Every cruel child is on the hunt for them; every cruel ride is engineered for their destruction. As if that wasn't bad enough, King Geek is looking to claim a new title for himself... as the new Lord of Christmasland! However, when Sykes turns the keys to start the Wraith, it jump-starts Manx, bringing him back to life. Chess and Agnes use the glowing balloons to engineer a death-defying escape. EPILOGUE—PHANTOMS: Tom has worked the big grift his whole life, conning a fortune off the rubes and always on the run from enemies, shadows, and phantoms. But no one outruns the Wraith...not with Charlie Manx behind the wheel. This 2014 IDW Publishing Hardback is in near mint condition.
