Carstairs used his Reith Lecture to analyse social changes that have taken place over the century, including changes to sexual morality, the role of women, and the prevalence of violence and mental illness. His condoning of pre-marital sex from such a respected and prominent public platform led to considerable public furore, and his lectures have been seen by some as an important portent of the upcoming cultural changes of the sixties. George Morrison Carstairs (1916-1991), psychiatrist and anthropologist, served as first head of the Medical Research Council, 1960-71, and as president of the World Mental Health Organisation 1968-72. Carstairs 'must have known how much outrage the forthright opinions he expressed in his Reith lectures of 1962 would generate' (ODNB), but operated with integrity throughout his life, opposing the anti-psychiatrists in the 1970s, and refusing to run for the position of president of the newly established Royal College of Psychiatrists in 1971, a post which he might well have won. This 1963 The Hogarth Press Hardcover is in good condition. DJ spotted. Some foxing but good for ages.
