George French Angas is one of our most important sources for information on material culture in New Zealand in the early 1840s. He drew attention in his writings to many aspects of Maori life which were changing, and he recorded many signs of it in his drawings. Despite these changes he recorded, however, many facets and artifacts of the old way which were still distrincly Maori and still evolving to meet Maori needs of the nineteenth century.
