In 1831 Victor Hugo published 'Notre-Dame de Paris - 1482 (Hugo detested the title 'The Huncbback of Notre-Dame', which an English translator had given the book). It was immensely popular, drawing thousands of tourists from all over the world to see the great cathedral. At the center of this tempestuous novel are four unforgettable characters: Esmeralda, the beautiful gypsy girl; Captain Phoebus de Châteaupers, whom she loves; Claude Frollo, the monk who loves her; and watching over all, Quasimodo, the hunchback. Because of Hugo's storytelling skill, the novel retained its power despite abridgments, movies, musicals, cartoons, and comic books that have often tried to tame or denature its convoluted story of lust, revenge, torture, and murder set amid the filthy streets of medieval Paris. Other historical novels had been published before 'Notre-Dame de Paris', but none had depicted people from all levels of society - merchants, priests, army officers, beggars, writers, gypsies - and immersed them in a plot with as many crannies, dead ends, twists, and precipies as a Gothic cathedral itself. This 2006 Borders Classic/Ann Arbor Media Group Paperback is in good condition. Cover worn; text block a little grubby but otherwise good.
